The Solution Is Focus
When business leaders understand how distraction affects the workforce, they can make changes to improve everything from overall employee satisfaction to the company’s bottom line. Management of California-based Tower Paddle Boards realized this and attacked the problem with a creative and effective solution. (Much of the following information comes from “What Happened When I Moved My Company to a 5-Hour Workday,” an October 30, 2016, article by Stephan Aarstol for www.fastcompany.com.)
Founders of the business created it based on their love of paddle boarding. But once profits starting soaring, no one at the company had any time for their favorite hobby anymore. Everyone was too busy working. They needed a change.
To give employees their lives back, company founder Stephan Aarstol implemented a five-hour workday. Everyone started work at 8:00 a.m., and as long as they proved to be highly productive, they were permitted to leave at 1:00 p.m.
Aarstol also offered monetary incentive for his employees’ heightened focus. He rolled out a 5 percent profit sharing at the same time. Now, someone making $40,000 a year stood to make $8,000 more, all while working 750 fewer hours. It didn’t cost the company a single dime. There was no financial risk to the bottom line.
All he asked for in exchange was that each team member be twice as productive as they had been previously. He set the bar high, and his employees met the challenge. Their work week became better than most people’s vacation weeks.
Financially, the results were astounding. They were listed in Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing companies two years in a row. They had a ten-person team that generated $9 million in revenues. In the first year of the changes, their annual revenues were up 40 percent.
1% Tip: Exchange Time for Productivity
Engage your employees in a conversation about making work time much more effective so that you can all enjoy a better work-life balance. Working together to monitor the overall effectiveness of everything from meetings to email communications or individual work can enable a widespread improvement in overall effectiveness and a simultaneous improvement in joy and wellness.
